As you may have already seen, the LA Zine Fest has cancelled its 2020 event due to the covid-19 pandemic, which means that we have as well. You also may have noticed that as the severity of the virus increased in the US, we stopped promoting that our submissions were opening – we were anticipating this happening, and we felt it was irresponsible to be advertising our event when there were so many people in need of help. We’re very disappointed to have to do this, especially with such exciting plans for how we wanted to run this year’s event. However, like all other like all other event organizers it’s far more important to us to protect our communities from things that might cause them harm. So, we’re sorry that there will be no Playdate Pop Up as you’ve come to know it this year, but we hope you understand.
That being said (written?), we’re exploring the potential to move Playdate Pop Up from an irl event to a url event. We’ve been thinking about and trying to understand the core experience of what our event is and understand that to be a temporary arcade space. As we watch musicians we love begin to stream performance rather than host them in venues we’ve begun to ask ourselves a question: How do we make the digital equivalent of an impermanent space to play games? We have some ideas about how to make this happen that we’ll be looking into really soon. So there may be a way to have Playdate Pop Up 2020 yet! We’ll let you know once we’ve figured if there’s a path for us to run an event online.
In the mean time, please stay safe. Stay home as much as possible, wash your hands, don’t hoard resources, and be kind to each other.
